December 2017

During the rainy winter months, if the ground is wet, contact the ride scheduler on the morning of the ride to see if it's been relocated to a drier trail. There may also be a notice on the web site (http://www.nrmbc.org), or the NRMB egroup, but don't rely on this if there is not a comment.

The Endurance Rating rates distance, climbing & pace of the rides.   E1 represents the lowest level of exertion needed to complete a ride. And E5 represents the highest level of exertion needed to complete a ride.

The Technical Rating (how smooth/rocky):

WEEKEND RIDES

Saturday, December 2: Sunset Hills/Lang Ranch/Dead Cow Rd..   This is an epic ride with lots of climbing and technical descents. We start up the Sunset Hills Trail including a bonus loop (built by CORBA in October 2011) up and over a few short steep sections and down to the Woodbridge Loop. We'll take the Woodbridge Connector to the Autumn Ridge Trail, up the steep (but short) Heart Attack Hill. Keeping right, we climb up to the start of the Rocky Singletrack on the left at the crest of the hill. After that fun descent, we climb the Albertson Motorway, go part way around China Flats, and enjoy the downhill technical challenges of Dead Cow Rd. We will endure a few blocks of street riding to the Hidden Meadows trail at the end of Falling Star. This twisty trail connects to the Oak Brook vista trail, which takes us along the ridge and down another fun descent to Lang Ranch Pkwy where we turn right. Then, it's a left on Oak Valley Ln. to the Autumn Ridge trailhead. That leads us back to the Woodbridge Loop and to the Sunset Hills Trail. On the way back down, we bypass the bonus loop and take the original trail (all downhill) to the finish. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E4, Technical Rating = T4, 18 Miles and 3800 Feet of Climbing , About 4 Hours

Sunday, December 3: Reseda to the Foundation.   From the Reseda parking area we will take the singletrack connector up to dirt Mullholland, then take Temescal to the Hub. From the Hub its an easy, fairly flat trip out to the Foundation, with it's spectacular view in all directions. This is our turnaround point, from here we'll retrace our route back to the parking lot at Reseda. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Saturday, December 9: Sycamore Canyon from the Beach.   We’ll begin at the parking lot and ride up the Big Sycamore Trail to Two Foxes and back to the main fireroad. We'll go to Ranch Center Drive (paved bike path) and climb up for a few miles. Then we'll blast down to Art's Trail and the Sin Nombre Trail. The rewarding part of this ride is going downhill to the beach by riding on Two Foxes Trail and the main fireroad. Meet at 9:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

We then have the option to take runs down Kona, Burn Victim and the Top Dog, Dog Tag combo. This ride is a super-cool circuit of ascents and descents akin to a day at a ski resort. Then we grind up the steep Oil Well Road and connect with the Rocky Peak Fireroad.  We continue to the top of Chumash and head down that awesome trail that is a bit rocky at the top, but mostly firm and flowy singletrack back to our starting point. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Saturday, December 30: Ojai - Shelf Rd to Gridley to Nordhoff Peak.   This is a beautiful out and back ride on 80% singletrack and affords some spectacular views. We start with an easy two mile warm up on the Shelf Rd fireroad which is both rolling & picturesque.  Then, after a ¼ road ride we’ll cutoff onto a short connector singletrack for a fairly technical climb up to the main Gridley trail.  The first half of Gridley is a moderate climb and passes through several avocado groves. The second half of the main trail narrows and steepens a bit with many switchbacks. At the top of the saddle we’ll cutoff onto a fairly short but very steep fireroad that leads to an old fire lookout tower. The views from the top make the climb up worth the effort. Since this is an out and back ride, those who tire can turn back at any time and coast back to the cars. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

We start with a gentle climb up the new Encinal singletrack segment to the Decker/Mulholland singletrack segment of the Backbone Trail, cross the road and continue up to Etz Meloy Motorway. We'll head west on the Etz Meloy segment of the Backbone Trail enjoying the spectacular views in all directions, including into Hidden Valley and Lake Sherwood. After 2 miles on the fireroad, we'll cross paved Yerba Buena Rd to get onto the singletrack Backbone Trail and ride it 4.5 miles to the base of the the Mishe Mokwa Trail. We'll turn around here and retrace our path. An easier option on the way back is to take Yerba Buena/Little Sycamore Canyon Rd back instead of the Etz Meloy Motorway. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
