Saturday, April 25: Sycamore Canyon Trail Days, BBQ & Camping 2015.   Once a year we have an opportunity to help restore the trails and then BBQ and camp at Danielson Multiuse Area in Sycamore Canyon. It is opened annually for the Santa Monica Mountains Trail Days! This is a unique opportunity to work on the trails that we enjoy so much in Sycamore Canyon followed by a BBQ, prizes, and camping on Friday and/or Saturday night. In past years a bunch of us worked on the trails, took in the BBQ, etc. and than camped in the quiet heart of the canyon. The drawing was fabulous, everyone won at least one prize and there was lots of cool stuff! Enjoying a cold beer after the trail work under the sycamore and oak trees with the breeze blowing through the canyon while the BBQ is cooking, what a treat! This is hands down the best day to get in your trail maintenance work! You can help with the trailwork on Saturday and/or Sunday. Camping is optional, you may leave with the escort after the BBQ. Following is the info from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council that hosts the event.

TRAIL DAYS is a weekend for individuals and groups to build new trails and restore old ones. Partners with California State Parks include Concerned Off Road Bicyclist Assn. (CORBA), Santa Monica Mountains Task Force of Sierra Club, Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council, California Native Plant Society (CNPS), National Park Service, and others.

Schedule at a glance

You can volunteer to help out on Saturday, Sunday, or both.

BRING: LUNCHES, BEVERAGES, SNACKS AND WATER. Tools and instruction on using them are provided.
WEAR: Gloves, hat, long pants, protective clothing, and work boots or sturdy shoes.
REGISTRATION: Advance registration is required for the following activities, and appreciated by April 21st! Links to register online are below.
TRAILWORK: Saturday and/or Sunday. Help out with one or both!
CAMPING: Free camping Friday and/or Saturday nights for volunteers at the Danielson Multi-use Area located under the sycamores and oaks in the heart of Point Mugu State Park.
DINNER: Sat. Night Barbecue Free FOR VOLUNTEERS. Bring appetizers and beverages.
DIRECTIONS: Ventura Freeway to Wendy in Newbury Park; S to Potrero Road, turn right; at Reino bear left to NPS service road (first driveway). Cars will be escorted into and out of the park only at designated times. DON'T BE LATE or you won't be able to drive in.
VEHICLE ACCESS: You will be able to caravan into and out of the park by vehicle only at a few designated times. See the online registration forms for details of these times.

WEEKEND RIDES

Saturday, April 4: San Juan Trail in OC.   This trail is all singletrack and it's one of the more technical rides in Orange County. The Old San Juan Trail starts off with a climb up a steep, technical set of stacked switchbacks from the floor of Hot Springs Canyon. It then traverses briefly before steeply ascending a ridge toward Sugarloaf Mountain and Cocktail Rock. Large boulders, chaparral, brush, and nice views abound. Be advised there are some exposed sections commanding all your attention. After a stop at Cocktail Rock we'll continue on the Old San Juan Trail to Blue Jay. From here we'll retrace our tracks and cutoff on the New San Juan Trail for a loop that brings us back to Cocktail Rock. From here the ride will proceed back to the cars along the same trail as we climbed in on. The downhill from here is simply amazing and you'll have a hard time wiping the silly grin off your face at the bottom of this long, sweet descent! Caution; the DG or decomposed granite makes the riding surface slippery (like marbles on a tile floor) so be careful on the way down. Also, there are a few washed out sections in some turns so look ahead! This is definitely some of the best singletrack in So Cal!
This is *NOT* a ride for novice, beginner, or low-intermediate riders. This ride is ONLY for strong intermediate & advanced riders.

Directions:   DIRECTIONS: Take I-5 to Ortega Highway ( CA 74 ) exit in San Juan Capistrano and head east on CA 74 about 12.5 miles to the intersection with Hot Springs Canyon Road on the left just before CA 74 turns sharply to the right. Hot Springs Canyon Road is signed as Lazy W Ranch and is just west of the San Juan Fire Station. A large dirt parking area is found at the San Juan Trailhead about 0.5 miles from CA 74, along with bathrooms (no running water). A Forest Adventure Pass is required to park anywhere in this area.

Sunday, April 5: Sycamore Canyon/Backbone/Guadalasca.   We begin with the connector trail that leads to Big Sycamore Canyon Road. We'll descend down into the canyon a few miles and down Sin Nombre and Two Foxes. Then it's another climb up to the top via the Backbone singletrack. We'll ride the fireroad over to Guadalasca and enjoy another great descent. Then we'll take the Wood Canyon trail up to the water tower and descend Sage. Finally it's back up the main trail to the dreaded asphalt hill. From the top it's just a short ride back to the cars. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero Road. Park in the adjacent dirt parking area.

Saturday, April 11: Wood Ranch/Lang Ranch/Sunset Hills .   We will start at the Long Ranch trail head, located at the intersection of Long Cyn rd and S Wood Ranch pkwy. From here we will ride West on the Woodridge Connector, take a sharp right on the Sunrise trail which turns into the Woodridge Loop Trail. Continuing West on the Woodridge Loop Trail, cross Sunset hills Blvd, back on the Woodridge Loop Trail, we will enjoy a short climb and turn left on the Sunset Hills single track trail. We will  ride this rolling trail, with a fair amount of climbing on the return trip, out, take a right at the intersection, and head to the trail head on Erbes rd. After a short break, we will then retrace our way back to the Woodridge Loop trail, enjoy a little descending fun, and turn left continuing on the Woodridge Loop Trail. Then its a right turn on the pavement and a slight left onto the Woodridge Connector and then turn left on the Autumn Ridge Trail, which includes Heart Attack hill. No worries, its pretty short. Continuing on the Autumn Ridge trail, turn right at two intersections which takes us to the top of the LangRanch Ridge trail. Once at the top, we will turn left and enjoy a fun rocky single track descent down the Hidden cyn Trail, which drops us out on the Meadow Vista Trail. Taking a left on the Meadow Vista Trail, we will enjoy a short but fairly steep climb where we can regroup and take a break at the top. From here we will blast down the Sunrise Trail, veer right and enjoy another great descent down the Long cyn Trail back to the cars. This ride is mainly on single track.     Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Directions:   Take the 101 or 118 Freeway to the 23 Freeway and exit at Olsen Rd. At the end of the off-ramp proceed east. If you pass a golf course you went the wrong way. Proceed to Wood Ranch Parkway and turn right (South). Park in the paved parking area where this street dead-ends.

Sunday, April 12: Space Mountain/Rosewood.   This is a fun loop ride with lots of singletrack and switchbacks for your biking enjoyment. We start with a singletrack climb up Space Mountain. Then we’ll continue along the Los Robles Trail to the "Lookout" and take a break at the picnic table. Then it’s time to catch some thrills as we make our way down the Rosewood Singletrack to Lynn Road. After a short jaunt on pavement we are back on dirt again. This portion of the trail has a few ups and downs and connects with the whoop-de-doo trail that leads back to the cars. Meet at 9:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Moorpark Road exit in Thousand Oaks. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Take Moorpark till it dead-ends at Greenmeadow Avenue and park in the dirt lot on the right.

Sunday, April 12: Kite Fly-In!.   Get out your paper, sticks and glue or just go buy a kite. It is time for our 12th annual kite fly-in. After a short ride with Randy, we'll have lunch and then meet at Randy’s apartment and hike up fireworks hill where we’ll find out who in the club is the most skilled “flyer” (or should that read, “who has the most hot air”!!!). A fun day in April. The Kite fly-in is right after the scheduled ride sometime around noon. Meet at 12:30 pm and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Saturday, April 18: New Millennium Loop.   For a warm up we’ll ride the Grasslands trail and head out to DeAnza Park. From there we’ll bike a couple of blocks on the road to the Bark Park. Then we’ll climb the singletrack behind the Bark Park to the New Millennium Trail and head north at the “T”. From here there’s some really sweet singletrack riding for miles with plenty of ascents and decents, and switchbacks galore, including the "Too-Tight" Switchbacks and the Pyramid Switchbacks. We’ll stay on the Millennium Singletrack which weaves through the Calabasas Hills and affords some spectacular views for quite a few miles. Eventually we’ll hook up with the Las Virgenes View Trail which will take us back to the cars. Meet at 8:29 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Las Virgenes Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Las Virgenes toward the ocean. Park in one of the dirt areas on the corner of Las Virgenes and Mulholland.

Saturday, April 18: Sycamore Canyon from the Beach.   We’ll begin at the parking lot and ride up the Big Sycamore Trail to Two Foxes and back to the main fireroad. We'll go to Ranch Center Drive (paved bike path) and climb up for a few miles. Then we'll blast down to Art's Trail and the Sin Nombre Trail. The rewarding part of this ride is going downhill to the beach by riding on Two Foxes Trail and the main fireroad. Meet at 9:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Directions:   For those who are coming from the San Fernando/ Los Angeles area: Take the 101 Fwy towards Ventura and exit on Kanan Road (make a left turn from the exit ramp).
Then make a right turn on PCH 1 and head towards Sycamore Canyon (it is approximately 14 miles northwest of Kanan Road and is on the right side).

For those who are coming from the Santa Barbara/ Ventura/ Oxnard/ Camarillo area: Take the 101S Fwy (101N for those who are coming from Thousand Oaks/ Simi Valley) and exit on S Las Posas Road (going towards PCH). Then go to PCH 1 South and look for signs to go to Sycamore Canyon (which is on the left side).

If you don’t want to pay the $12 fee for parking in the lot you can look for parking on PCH. For the ride we'll meet on the park side of Pacific Coast Hwy 1 for the ride (in front of the restrooms, located by the campground/ parking lot area, turn left after you pass the gaurd).

Sunday, April 19: Grasslands - Short Bulldog Loop.   We’ll bike over to Malibu Creek State Park via the Grasslands trail. Once inside the park we’ll proceed along the main fireroad, which passes through a fairly short but technical rocky streambed. After a short stop at the M*A*S*H site we’ll tackle the first 1.25 miles of Bulldog. After the steep but fairly short climb up Bulldog we’ll cut off onto Lookout Fireroad that will bring us down to a paved road in the Malibu Lake area. Then we’ll take Crags Road to a back entrance of the park and pedal back to the cars via the same path as before. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Lost Hills Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Park in the lot for DeAnza Park located on the northwest corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes Roads.

Sunday, April 26: Santa Rosa/Lower SR/Liz Rock/Lynnmere Loop.   This ride includes the Lower Butte Trail, the Shooting Star Trail, and the entire Lynnmere Trail loop. We start by riding up to the CLU cross. We will continue west on the Santa Rosa Trail until just past the driveway crossing where we go left at the T and take the Lower Butte Trail to Wildwood Ave. We'll ride up the pavement for about 1/4 mile to the Santa Rosa connector trail on the right. This fun little spur takes us back to the SR trail where we go right. Then it's a left on the Shooting Star Trail down to the valley floor. We turn left on the Lower SR Trail and continue west until we climb up the Box Canyon Trail to Lizard Rock. Then, it's down Lizard Rock Trail past the falls to the Lynnmere Trail. We climb up Lynnmere, go left near the top, complete the entire Lynnmere loop that includes some fun descents and some hike-a-bike, and go back down into the canyon. Then, it's up the fire road to Parking Lot 2 and the Mesa Trail. We climb UP the Santa Rosa switchbacks and continue eastbound back to our starting point. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Take Lynn for several miles (it will turn into Olsen Road) until you reach Mountclef Blvd (at CLU). Or, from the 23 Freeway, exit at Avenida de los Arboles and go west. Turn right on Mountclef (at the stop sign after Moorpark Rd.), cross Olsen Rd. and park on the street.

Sunday, April 26: Grasslands to Dam.   Starting from De Anza Park, we’ll bike over to Malibu Creek State Park via the Grasslands Trail. Once inside the park, we will proceed along the main fireroad that leads up to Crags Road, which passes through a fairly short but technical rocky streambed (some of the technical parts can be rideable, but you can walk this area to be on the safe side). After a short stop at the M*A*S*H area, we continue on to the dam. We’ll retrace our tracks that take us back to De Anza Park. Meet at 9:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

NIGHT RIDES

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday Nights.  See Summary Section of the Newsletter for meeting times, ride times are 15 minutes later. The lengths of all rides are between 10 & 15 miles with ride times of 1.5 - 2.5 hours. Lights are needed for the months of September to May. During the summer months they may not be needed, but it's a good idea to bring them just in case there's a delay. The specific routes taken for the night rides will be determined at the trailhead.

Meeting Locations for Evening Rides:

MTB Backbone at Encinal.   From Thousand Oaks and points west, exit the 101 Freeway at Westlake Blvd and head south. About 3.5 miles past Potrero, turn left onto Mulholland and go 2.5 miles. Make a very sharp right turn onto Encinal Canyon Rd (west, back towards Decker), drive for 2.3 miles until you see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.
From Agoura and points east, exit the 101 at Kanan and head south. After 6 miles, turn right onto Mulholland for 1 mile, then bear left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. After 2.3 miles more, you will see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.

MTB Backbone from Kanan at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Kanan exit in Agoura Hills. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Take Kanan for several miles until you reach the third tunnel. Park in the paved parking area just before the tunnel.

MTB Calabasas Peak at Night.   Take the 101 Fwy to Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr. exit. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south (towards the ocean). Continue south on Mulholland and make a right on Valmar which becomes Old Topanga Canyon Rd. Continue on Old Topanga which will join Mulholland Hwy briefly and then continue on the left. Follow Old Topanga about 1.5 miles and look for the Calabasas Peak trail head on the right across from Summit to Summit trail.

MTB Cheeseboro at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Chesebro exit in Agoura. Head north and make a right on Chesebro Road. Follow the narrow road one-mile and turn right at the park entrance. Park in the lower, paved parking lot (the gate to the upper lot is closed and locked at sunset).

MTB Chumash at Night.   Take the 118 Freeway to the Yosemite Avenue exit in Simi Valley. At the end of the off-ramp proceed north to Flanagan and make a right. Park on the side of the road at the end of Flanagan.

MTB CLU/Santa Rosa at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Lynn Road exit in Thousand Oaks. At the end of the off-ramp proceed north. Take Lynn for several miles (it will turn into Olsen Road) until you reach Mountclef Blvd (at CLU). Or, from the 23 Freeway, exit at Avenida de los Arboles and go west. Turn right on Mountclef (at the stop sign after Moorpark Rd.), cross Olsen Rd. and park on the street.

MTB Dos Vientos at Night.   From the 101 freeway, turn south onto Wendy Drive, towards the ocean. Continue for about 0.7 miles and turn right at Borchard Rd and head West 0.5 miles. Turn left on to S. Reino Rd taking this South for about a mile passing Maurice Dr. On your left as you pass Paseo de Leon will be a Church parking lot. We will meet there.

MTB Grasslands at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Lost Hills Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Park in the lot for DeAnza Park located on the northwest corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes Roads.

MTB Johnson's Motorway at Night.   From Thousand Oaks take the 118 and exit at Rocky Peak Rd. Turn right, and then an immediate left onto Santa Susana Pass Rd. Proceed to Iverson Rd. and turn left. From the the South, from the 118 exit Topanga Cyn Blvd & turn left. Turn right on Santa Susana Pass Rd., and right onto Iverson Rd. Parking is just outside the gate, near the underpass in Iverson Rd.

MTB Lang Ranch/Albertson at Night.   Exit the 101 Freeway on Westlake Blvd and head north for about 3 miles. When you go past the North Ranch Community Center you will go downhill and the first traffic light is at the corner of Westlake and Lang Ranch Parkway. Turn right onto Lang Ranch Parkway and drive about 0.8 miles to where the pavement ends and Albertson Fire Road begins.

MTB Lang Ranch/Sunset at Night.   Heading north on the 23 toward Simi, get off at Sunset Blvd and turn right. Continue straight until just before you get to the guard shack. Park in the lot on the right.

MTB Las Virgenes Canyon at Night.   From the 101, exit Las Virgenes and turn North (away from the ocean). Proceed approximately 1.5 miles to the dead end. Parking is on the street.

MTB Malibu Creek State Park - Bulldog at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Las Virgenes Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Las Virgenes toward the ocean. Turn right onto Mulholland and proceed a 1/4 mile and park on the road at the trailhead.

MTB New Millennium/Las Virgenes View/Grasslands at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Lost Hills Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Park in the lot for DeAnza Park located on the northwest corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes Roads.

MTB New Millennium/Las Virgenes View/MCSP/Grasslands at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Lost Hills Road exit in Calabasas. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Park in the lot for DeAnza Park located on the northwest corner of Lost Hills and Las Virgenes Roads.

MTB Reseda at Night.   Due to the extra drive, we will meet @ 6:15 and ride by 6:30. Meeting place: Take the 101 Freeway to the Reseda Blvd. exit in Tarzana. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south (towards the ocean). Continue up Reseda and park at the Caballero trailhead. Trailhead is on the left. If you pass the Braemar Country Club you’ve gone too far.

MTB Space Mountain at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Moorpark Road exit in Thousand Oaks. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean. Take Moorpark till it dead-ends at Greenmeadow Avenue and park in the dirt lot on the right.

MTB Sycamore Canyon at Night.   Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero Road. Park in the adjacent dirt parking area.

MTB Topanga Area at Night.   From Thousand Oaks: take the 101 South and exit at Mulholland Dr/Valley Circle Blvd. Turn left on Calabasas Rd then make first right on Mulholland Dr. Drive approx 1.75 miles and turn right (south) on Topanga Cyn Blvd. Drive approx 3 miles and make a left on Viewridge Rd (just past the summit). Park at end of Viewridge Rd. From the East SF Valley: take the 101 North and exit at Topanga Cyn Blvd SOUTH. Drive South for 3.5 miles and make a left on Viewridge Rd (just past the summit). Park at the end of the Viewridge Rd.

MTB Trippet Ranch to Overlook at Night.   Take the 101 Fwy to the Topanga Blvd exit. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south (towards the ocean). Continue up Topange approx. 5 miles until you reach Entrada which is the entrance to the park on the left. Follow Entrada to the park entrance.

MTB Triunfo Canyon Trail at Night.   Exit the 101 Freeway going south on Westlake Blvd. Go south for about a mile and then turn west (right) on Triunfo Canyon Road. This will lead you to Triunfo Park. Turn left onto Tamarack St and turn into the second parking lot on the left. We start at the far west end of the park.

MTB Wildwood at Night.   Take the Lynn Road exit, off of the 101 Fwy in Thousand Oaks, and go north until you come to Avenida De Los Arboles. Turn left and go about 1 mile to the end. From Simi Valley, go west on the 118 Fwy and then south when it turns into the 23 Fwy. Get off on Avenida De Los Arboles and go right for about 2 miles to the end. Hang a U-turn at the end (watch for opposing traffic) and then turn right into the dirt parking lot.
