WEEKEND RIDES

Sunday, September 1: Brown Mountain Dam for Advanced Beginners.   We start with an easy counter-clockwise trip around the watershed, then get into the Arroyo Seco canyon proper as we start up the Gabrioleno trail. It starts out paved, then turns to fireroad, then double track, then singletrack. The further up we get, the more fun and technical it becomes. Think of the rock garden leading to the MASH set in Malibu Creek for comparison. Overall more rideable, but with hike-a-bike sections for everyone. Also lots of stream crossings. We'll take a break at the dam, then double back down for a quicker run back down the trail. When we arrive back at the watershed, we'll continue counter-clockwise around the park, with JPL on our right. A brief encounter with a sandy wash, and we're back to the parking lot. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E2, Technical Rating = T3, 11 Miles and 700 Feet of Climbing , About 3 Hours

OPTION 3: Navigate to I-210 W. Exit at Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada/Flintridge. Turn right/east on Foothill Boulevard, heading east. Cross the intersection at Oak Grove Drive about 3/4 of a mile later, and head straight into the the park.

ALL OPTIONS FROM THE PARK ENTRANCE:

An ample parking lot is on your right, near the soccer & baseball fields, just before the watershed. If that lot is full, use overflow parking on the dirt lot in the watershed on the other side of the open gate at the end of the road. Do not park in spots on the upper road near the entrance of the park. They're limited to two hours. Rides start & end at the paved lot.

Sunday, September 1: Sunset Hills/Lang Ranch/Dead Cow Rd..   This is an epic ride with lots of climbing and technical descents. We start up the Sunset Hills Trail including a bonus loop (built by CORBA in October 2011) up and over a few short steep sections and down to the Woodbridge Loop. We'll take the Woodbridge Connector to the Autumn Ridge Trail, up the steep (but short) Heartbreak Hill. Keeping right, we climb up to the the start of the Rocky Singletrack on the left at the crest of the hill. After that fun descent, we climb the Albertson Motorway, go part way around China Flats, and enjoy the downhill technical challenges of Dead Cow Rd. We will endure a few blocks of street riding to the Hidden Meadows trail at the end of Falling Star. This twisty trail connects to the Oak Brook vista trail, which takes us along the ridge and down another fun descent to Lang Ranch Pkwy where we turn right. Then, it's a left on Oak Valley Ln. to the Autumn Ridge trailhead. That leads us back to the Woodbridge Loop and to the Sunset Hills Trail. On the way back down, we bypass the bonus loop and take the original trail (all downhill) to the finish. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E4.5, Technical Rating = T4, 18 Miles and 3800 Feet of Climbing , About 4 Hours
, Ride Leader: Jonathan

Directions:   Take the 101 freeway to the 23 North, or take the 118 freeway to the 23 South. From the 23 Freeway, exit at Sunset Hills Bl. Go East on Sunset Hills Bl. for 0.2 miles and turn left on Erbes at the four-way stop. Go 0.7 miles on Erbes to the dirt lot on the right.

Monday, September 2: Newbury Park & Dos Vientos Figure 8.   This will be a bit of a roller-coaster of a ride along trails that go up and down the hills in the open spaces of Newbury Park and Dos Vientos. None of the hills are long grinds but the frequent changes in pace should keep you on your toes! Along the way we'll see the twin ponds, some trails the equestrians would like to keep to themselves, and one trail that almost nobody knows about. We'll also see lots of houses below us with people parked on their sofas watching TV while we're having fun on our bikes! Most of our route will be on singletrack (including one that was built in the spring of 2011 that allows us to connect this all together), with some fireroad and a block or two on pavement a few times to connect it all up. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.5, Technical Rating = T3, 16 Miles and 2500 Feet of Climbing , About 3.5 Hours
, Ride Leader: Jonathan

We are going to ride in the opposite direction of the usual route.

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero Road. Park in the adjacent dirt parking area.

Saturday, September 7: Las Virgenes / Pump Hill / Cheeseboro / China Flat / Gas Pipe.   We start by heading north, veer left at the fork at about .3 miles, and continue for about another .7 miles. Then we turn left (west) and climb Pump Hill (only a .6 mile climb). We drop down (veer right at the fork just before the bottom) to the Cheeseboro Canyon main trail and come out at the picnic table. Then we head right (north) and continue up to Shepherds Flat. Now we take the Connector trail left (west) to the Palo Comado Outlook/Overlook. From there we drop down to Palo Comado and climb, about 1 mile, up to the big oak tree shade area. We continue and veer left at the fork and up to the base of Simi Peak.

We turn right and do the clockwise China Flat segment and end up back at the big oak tree shade area. Then we retrace our tracks back down to the Shepherds Flat area. We continue until we get to the top of Gas Pipe (aka Triple Threat DH). This is a T4 DH and comes out at the Bell Canyon Fire Road. Off in the right (south) direction we will eventually pass by the base of Pump Hill. We stay on the main fire road and veer right at the upcoming fork and continue back to the Las Virgenes TH.

Note: The T4 rating is for the 1.7 mile Gas Pipe downhill. Also, a perk, of this ride, is the 7.8 mile stretch of mostly downhill once we reach the base of Simi Peak and head back to the Las Virgenes TH. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.0, Technical Rating = T4, 16 Miles and 1900 Feet of Climbing , About 3.25 Hours
, Ride Leader: Bob

Directions:   From the 101, exit Las Virgenes and turn North (away from the ocean). Proceed approximately 1.5 miles to the dead end. Parking is on the street.

Sunday, September 8: Backbone from Encinal Rd to Mishe Mokwa.   This ride has lots of swooping, curving singletrack and some great views! We start with a gentle climb up the new Encinal singletrack segment to the Decker/Mulholland singletrack segment of the Backbone Trail, cross the road and continue up to Etz Meloy Motorway. We'll head west on the Etz Meloy segment of the Backbone Trail enjoying the spectacular views in all directions, including into Hidden Valley and Lake Sherwood. After 2 miles on the fireroad, we'll cross paved Yerba Buena Rd to get onto the singletrack Backbone Trail and ride it 4.5 miles to the base of the the Mishe Mokwa Trail. We'll turn around here and retrace our path. An easier option on the way back is to take Yerba Buena/Little Sycamore Canyon Rd back instead of the Etz Meloy Motorway. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.5, Technical Rating = T2, 19 Miles and 2500 Feet of Climbing , About 3.5 Hours
, Ride Leader: Jesse

Directions:   From Thousand Oaks and points west, exit the 101 Freeway at Westlake Blvd and head south. About 3.5 miles past Potrero, turn left onto Mulholland and go 2.5 miles. Make a very sharp right turn onto Encinal Canyon Rd (west, back towards Decker), drive for 2.3 miles until you see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.
From Agoura and points east, exit the 101 at Kanan and head south. After 6 miles, turn right onto Mulholland for 1 mile, then bear left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. After 2.3 miles more, you will see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.

Saturday, September 14: Wildwood/Lynnmere.   Wildwood is a great place for an easier ride. There's a lot of neat riding (single track, fire road, creek crossings, and a small waterfall). We'll head out towards Lizard Rock via the fire road. At the base of Lizard Rock, there's a short hill that we'll be walking. From here we'll take the singletrack, that has a few technical sections (all walkable), down to the valley floor and head on to the falls for a short break. Then there's a climb up the Lynnmere trail that we’ll be walking. Then lots of fun to be had on the singletrack that leads out to Lynn Road. After a couple miles of road riding we'll end up back at the main Wildwood parking lot. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E2.5, Technical Rating = T3, 7 Miles and 1000 Feet of Climbing , About 2 Hours
, Ride Leader: Randy

Directions:   Take the Lynn Road exit, off of the 101 Fwy in Thousand Oaks, and go north until you come to Avenida De Los Arboles. Turn left and go about 1 mile to the end. From Simi Valley, go west on the 118 Fwy and then south when it turns into the 23 Fwy. Get off on Avenida De Los Arboles and go right for about 2 miles to the end. Hang a U-turn at the end (watch for opposing traffic) and then turn right into the dirt parking lot.

Saturday, September 14: Santa Ana River Trail.   Simply put, this is one of the longest, best singletracks in this or any other region!!! Besides being such a beautiful singletrack ride in the pines it also just about the most fun that one can have on two wheels…at least legally! We’ll hit the SART just east of the quaint hamlet of Angeles Oaks. From here, we’ll be crossing creeks, curving through pine groves and roller-coasting over knolls. It’s not until a third of the way through the ride that you’ll notice you’ve been ascending most of the way. After crossing Glass Road we’ll gently climb some more while taking in the excellent views. Our turn around spot is at the South Fork Parking Picnic Area. On the return trip the trail rocks and rolls as you duck and dodge trees, stones and Manzanita. In fact, by the time you reach Middle Control Road you’ll have a silly grin plastered on your face that stretches from ear to ear. Then it’s a near 3 mile climb back out to the cars on fireroad. Note: This trail is fairly narrow with some steep drop-offs at times. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E5, Technical Rating = T5, 31 Miles and 3800 Feet of Climbing , About 5.5 Hours
, Ride Leader: Tamara

Directions:   Take I-10 east and exit at Alabama Street in the city of Redlands, at Lugonis Avenue (Hwy 38) head Northeast, toward the mountain. Drive about 18 to 20 miles before you reach Angelus Oaks. You'll see the Oaks Restaurant on the left side of the Hwy. Pass the restaurant and drive over the bridge and park in the parking area on the left side of the Hwy. Please note that an adventure pass is rehired for parking in the area. The drive is about 90 to 125 miles depending on where you live and takes about 1¾ to 2 hours so allow plenty of time to get there. It is so worth the drive. If you plan to go please rsvp so we can arrange carpooling.

Saturday, September 14: SART Modified.   THIS IS THE SLIGHTLY MODIFIED VERSION: At Glass Road, instead of climbing the last single track we take the fire road to the camp ground. This changes approx. 1000 feet of climbing from technical single track to easier fire road. We then take the downhill single track back with the faster group, so we won't miss a thing! That is virtually the only difference as well as a wee bit of a slower pace.

SART: Simply put, this is one of the longest, best singletracks in this or any other region!!! Once inside the park we’ll proceed along the main fireroad, which passes through a fairly short but technical rocky streambed. After a short stop at the M*A*S*H site we’ll tackle the first 1.25 miles of Bulldog. After the steep but fairly short climb up Bulldog we’ll cut off onto Lookout Fireroad that will bring us down to a paved road in the Malibu Lake area. Then we’ll take Crags Road to a back entrance of the park and pedal back to the cars via the same path as before. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Saturday, September 21: Ahmanson/Cheeseboro.   We start from the Upper-Las-Virgenes-Canyon-Open-Space-Preserve parking lot at the top of Victory and make our way up to Lasky’s Mesa, where we drop down to the Preserve entrance at the top end of Las Virgenes Road. From there we climb the fire road up to Cheeseboro Ridge and zip down into the canyon for a jaunt in and around the trails there before ending up at the top of Pump Hill, approached from the west. We’ll descend down into the canyon and take Sin Nombre over to Sage and make the climb up to the water tower. From here it’s a fast and fun decent down Wood Canyon. Then it’s another climb up to the top via Guadalasca. We’ll ride the fireroad over to Backbone and enjoy another great descent. After a short jaunt on Two Foxes we’ll head up the main fireroad and climb up the dreaded asphalt hill. The lengths of all rides are between 10 & 15 miles with ride times of 1.5 - 2.5 hours. Lights are needed for the months of September to May. Continue south on Mulholland and make a right on Valmar which becomes Old Topanga Canyon Rd. Continue on Old Topanga which will join Mulholland Hwy briefly and then continue on the left.
