NEWS FOR EVERYONE
Saturday, July 27: Pinot Wine Tasting Party & BBQ!.
It's been more than three years now since I had a wine-tasting/BBQ party - put it down to a lengthy work assignment in Texas! But now I'm getting back in the groove and it's time to keep the summer rolling by adding another weekend gathering to the list! A quick refresher: Anyone is welcome, but those who wish to be eligible for prizes should bring a 750 ml bottle of their favorite wine of this summer's choice, which is PINOT NOIR (yes, so check out what Miles has to say about it in the movie 'Sideways'!). We take the entrant wines, brown-bag them for secrecy, taste them and rate them (you can rate them without bringing a wine). As usual, there will be wine-related prizes for the top three winners. And where do bikes fit into all this? Well, it's practice for the wine tasting in Solvang after the Prelude ride in November!
I'll provide some drinks, shortbread and ice-cream (plus more this year from some culinary friends), so bring something to BBQ and a dish to share, if you wish.
Date: Saturday 27th July
Time: 4:00 pm onwards (wine tasting starts 5-5:30 usually)
Location: My home in Woodland Hills (email me at Graham6122@att.net. if you want directions)
Facilities: Ping-pong table
Saturday, August 3: SUMMER BEACH BBQ!!. It's time for our Big Summer Beach BBQ!! After the rides we will hangout at the beach, play some frisbee and badminton, swim in the surf along with a big BBQ. Bring something to grill, something to share and something to drink. You may also want to bring along a towel, a change of clothes if you are riding, beach chair, etc. Charlotte will be arriving early to reserve some tables. If you are not riding in the morning, look for tables that have blue tablecloths and NRMB notes posted on them. The BBQ should be underway around 12:30 p.m.
Directions:
For those who are coming just for the BBQ at Sycamore Cove or riding, most will park in Sycamore Cove then ride across PCH to meet on the park side of Pacific Coast Hwy 1 for the ride in Sycamore Cyn. (For biking meet in front of the restrooms in Sycamore Cyn, located by the campground/ parking lot area, turn left after you pass the guard).
From the San Fernando/ Los Angeles area: Take the 101 Fwy towards Ventura and exit on Kanan Road (make a left turn from the exit ramp).
Then make a right turn on PCH 1 and head towards Sycamore Canyon (it is approximately 14 miles northwest of Kanan Road). Sycamore Cove and is on the left side.
For those who are coming from the Santa Barbara/ Ventura/ Oxnard/ Camarillo area: Take the 101S Fwy (101N for those who are coming from Thousand Oaks/ Simi Valley) and exit on S Las Posas Road (going towards PCH). Then go to PCH 1 South and look for signs to go to Sycamore Canyon. Sycamore Cove is on the right side.
If you don’t want to pay the $12 fee for parking in the lot you can look for parking on PCH.
WEEKEND RIDES
Saturday, July 6: Sycamore: Backbone/Guadalasca/Overlook/Backbone .
This is an extended loop at one of NRMB's favorite ride locations! It begins familiar enough, accessing Sycamore Canyon via the connector trail then down the asphalt hill and over to the Sin Nombre and Two Foxes singletracks all the way to the base of the Backbone singletrack. We'll climb Backbone and the Overlook fireroad over to Guadalasca, a very fun singletrack that takes us down into Wood Canyon. This is where the "extended" portion of the ride begins. We'll ride down Wood Canyon and Sycamore Canyon toward the beach to the base of the Overlook fireroad. Then, it's a 4.5 mile moderate climb up Overlook to the top of Backbone, where we'll enjoy a fabulous descent back to the canyon floor! From the bottom of Backbone, we'll rejoin the Sycamore Canyon fireroad and retrace our route back to the cars. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E4.5, Technical Rating = T3.5, 27 Miles and 3500 Feet of Climbing

Directions: Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero Road. Park in the adjacent dirt parking area.
Sunday, July 7: Ahmanson/Cheeseboro Beginner.
The National Park Service opened the Victory Blvd entrance to the Ahmanson Ranch area (now called the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve – what a mouthful!). Let’s start a ride here and venture into Cheeseboro from the east side for a change. After traversing the rolling hills of Ahmanson we’ll drop down into Las Virgenes Canyon and then downshift to make the climb up to Cheeseboro via what we "affectionately" have called "Pump Road" (Las Virgenes Canyon connector.) From there we will ride to Cheeseboro Canyon and on up to Sulphur Springs and possibly to Shepard Flats depending on the group. From there we will turn around and head back the way we came. Meet at 8:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E2.5-3, Technical Rating = T2.5, About 3 Hours
, Ride Leader: Michelle
Directions: Exit the 101 freeway at the Mulholland/Valley Circle off ramp and head north on Valley Circle for about 2 miles. Turn left (west) on Victory Blvd and head up the hill to the end, which is the Preserve entrance. Parking is $1 in the NPS lot (worked on the honor system, but they do check!) or free on the side roads close by.
Sunday, July 7: Santa Rosa/Wildwood Loop.
We start by climbing the hill behind CLU and traverse across the ridge toward the nursery for a quick warm-up. After a short stop we’ll retrace our tracks and cut-off onto the Santa Rosa trail that leads into Wildwood Park. This is a very fun singletrack that is moderate to fairly technical. There are some great views of the Santa Rosa Valley along the way. Once down in Wildwood we’ll head out towards Lizard Rock via the Stagecoach singletrack or the fireroad (your choice). From here we will take the Lizard Rock singletrack down to the valley floor and head on to the falls. Then there’s a fairly steep but relatively short climb up the beginning part of the Lynnmere trail. After the climb there is a lot of fun to be had on the rest of the singletrack, which leads out to Lynn Road. From here it is just a short road ride back to the cars. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Saturday, July 13: Mt. Pinos with Bonus Shuttle.
Mt. Pinos is the tallest peak in Ventura County at over 8000 feet. Although it’s a strenuous ride up the mountain it’s mucho fun (especially on the downhill return). We will ride the very scenic McGill Trail to the top of Mt. Pinos. It’s a tough climb so we’ll make a few stops on the way up. We’ll bike to the peak and take in the awesome 360* view. The trip back is a blast and descends along the same trail. Once back to the cars, we’ll shuttle everyone back to the upper parking lot for a bonus downhill on the now-familiar trail! Please RSVP if you plan to ride! Also, let me know if you have a vehicle that can carry 4 bikes and are willing to help shuttle to the top (we will bring you back to get your vehicle.) Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.

Shortly after the left curve you will see a big dirt lot on the right. The ride starts there. Allow at least 90 minutes for the drive from the Conejo Valley area.
