Castaic Lake SRA Trailwork Day – Oct 9
Help CORBA get the trails ready for their annual Fat-Tire-Festival, which will take place on October 17th by helping with some trailwork on Saturday, October 9th. We’ll be doing brush removal and some minor trail repair on the trails that will be used for the CORBA FTF Poker Ride. Details are on the CORBA news blog at: http://corbamtb.com/news/2010/09/24/castaic-lake-sra-trailwork-day-oct-9

RSVP to trailcrew@corbamtb.com or on CORBA's facebook page. Meet at 7:45 a.m. so we can roll out at 8:00 a.m.

Directions:
From the 5 north exit Parker Rd, go right, Parker turns into Ridge Route Road. Stay on Ridge Route Road until you get to Castaic Lake Drive (a three way stop) and turn right. Enter the park through the guard station on the right and turn left at the T-intersection at the end of the entrance driveway. Meet at the fourth parking area on the right. Please note: There is a parking fee to enter the park, however, let the entrance station attendant know you’re there to do “Volunteer trailwork with CORBA” and your entrance fees will be waived.

Saturday, October 16: Annual COSCA Trail Work Day.   This annual Conejo Valley event draws a large crowd and as always helps to put some very sweet trails back into good shape. Be sure to stay afterwards for the free barbeque and raffle. Meet at the Conejo Community Center in Thousand Oaks (Botanical Garden Entrance off Gainsborough Road). Registration and board busses: 7:30-8:00 a.m.

Things to bring:

• work gloves
• long pants and long sleeved shirt
• water
• sunglasses and sunblock
• bicycle helmet or hat to show your affiliation

Tools will be provided. There will be a free barbecue lunch and raffle afterwards from noon until 2:00 pm. Time: 7:30 am.

The vast majority of the work will be to construct the NEW Santa Rosa Valley Connector Trail. This trail will connect the Santa Rosa Trail on Mountclef Ridge (above CLU) to the Lower Santa Rosa Trail (AKA Baseline Trail) that runs along the base of the ridge in the Santa Rosa Valley. When this trail is completed, we will be able to ride a really fun loop from Wildwood, down to the Santa Rosa Valley and back up again. Current trails down to the Santa Rosa Valley are too steep to ride up.

Sunday, October 17: CORBA Fat Tire Fest @ Castaic Lake Recreation Center.   Join us for CORBA's biggest fundraising event (not to mention CORBA's biggest PARTY) of the year!

Directions:   Take the 405 / 5 Fwy North a few miles past Magic Mountain. Take Exit 176A for Parker Rd toward Castaic. Head to the right. Parker will turn into Ridge Route Road. Stay on that until you get to Castaic Lake Drive, three way stop, turn right. Then look for guard shack on right.

Friday, October 22: Kernville Fat Tire Festival.   Every year the NRMB has a strong contingent of riders going to the KFTF. This year should prove no different. WEEKEND RIDES

Saturday, October 2: Sycamore: Guadalasca - Backbone Loop.   We start off on the connector trail that leads to Big Sycamore Canyon Road. We’ll descend down into the canyon and take Sin Nombre over to Sage and make the climb up to the water tower. From here it’s a fast and fun decent down Wood Canyon. Then it’s another climb up to the top via Guadalasca. We’ll ride the fireroad over to Backbone and enjoy another great descent. After a short jaunt on Two Foxes we’ll head up the main fireroad and climb up the dreaded asphalt hill. From the top it’s just a short ride back to the cars. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.5, Technical Rating = T3.5, 19 Miles and 2900 Feet of Climbing , About 3.5 Hours
, Ride Leader: Charlotte

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero Road. Park in the adjacent dirt parking area.

Saturday, October 2: Sycamore: Ranch Center FR, Wood Cyn, 2 Foxes.   We start off on the connector trail and then descend the asphalt hill to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road. When we get to the base of the Sage Trail & Ranch Center Fire Road, we’ll climb up the fire road to the water tank. Then we descend down through Wood Canyon & almost back to the main Sycamore Canyon Fire Road. We turn left onto Two Foxes which merges back into the main fire road. We continue on, up the asphalt hill, then a short ride back to the parking area. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E2.5, Technical Rating = T2, About 2.25 Hours

Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero Road. Park in the adjacent dirt parking area.

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park. At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero Road. Park in the adjacent dirt parking area.

Sunday, October 3: Triunfo Canyon Trail and COSCA .   In the fall of 2005, the hard working trail builders rerouted the single track leading from Triunfo Park to the east COSCA area. It's much improved. We will start at Truinfo Park and climb up into the east COSCA area and work our way up to a challenging descent (most of us will walk this part). Then will have some fun single track out to where we can see Lake Sherwood. Then we head south to the main fire road and climb the Vista Loop Trail to the single track leading down to the base of Space Mountain. It’s down the fun Whoop de Doos and then up through Little Sherwood Forest and then back track to the Triunfo Canyon Trail singletrack via the Los Robles East fireroad. Meet at 9:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E4, Technical Rating = T4, About 2.5 Hours
, Ride Leader: Randy

Directions:   Exit the 101 Freeway going south on Westlake Blvd. Go south for about a mile and then turn west (right) on Triunfo Canyon Road. This will lead you to Triunfo Park. Turn left onto Tamarack St and turn into the second parking lot on the left. We start at the far west end of the park.

Sunday, October 10: Cheeseboro/China Flats Loop.   We will begin with an easy to moderate climb up the Sulphur Springs trail to Shepherd’s Flat. Then we head west on the Palo Comado connector singletrack that leads to the Palo Comado fireroad. We’ll continue up this rather steep fireroad for approximately a mile till we come to the top of China Flats. The loop ride around the top of China Flats is both beautiful and easy. Those with extra energy can ride and/or hike-a-bike up to Simi Peak. On a clear day the view from the top is well worth the fairly short but very strenuous technical climb up to it. We’ll then retrace our tracks and enjoy some fun downhill all the way back to the cars. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.5, Technical Rating = T3, 15 Miles and 1800 Feet of Climbing , About 3 Hours
, Ride Leader: Tom

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Chesebro exit in Agoura. Head north and make a right on Chesebro Road. Follow the narrow road one-mile and turn right at the park entrance. Continue up the paved road 1/4 mile to the top parking lot.

Saturday, October 23: Backbone from Encinal Rd to Mishe Mokwa.   This ride has lots of swooping, curving singletrack and some great views! We start with a gentle climb up the new Encinal singletrack segment to the Decker/Mulholland singletrack segment of the Backbone Trail, cross the road and continue up to Etz Meloy Motorway. We'll head west on the Etz Meloy segment of the Backbone Trail enjoying the spectacular views in all directions, including into Hidden Valley and Lake Sherwood. After 2 miles on the fireroad, we'll cross paved Yerba Buena Rd to get onto the singletrack Backbone Trail and ride it 4.5 miles to the base of the the Mishe Mokwa Trail. We'll turn around here and retrace our path. An easier option on the way back is to take Yerba Buena/Little Sycamore Canyon Rd back instead of the Etz Meloy Motorway. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.5, Technical Rating = T2, 19 Miles and 2500 Feet of Climbing , About 3.5 Hours

Directions:   From Thousand Oaks and points west, exit the 101 Freeway at Westlake Blvd and head south. About 3.5 miles past Potrero, turn left onto Mulholland and go 2.5 miles. Make a very sharp right turn onto Encinal Canyon Rd (west, back towards Decker), drive for 2.3 miles until you see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.
From Agoura and points east, exit the 101 at Kanan and head south. After 6 miles, turn right onto Mulholland for 1 mile, then bear left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. After 2.3 miles more, you will see the LA County Fire Camp sign on the left. Turn up the dirt road on the right that takes you to the trailhead parking.

Sunday, October 24: Santa Rosa/Wildwood Loop.   We start by climbing the hill behind CLU and traverse across the ridge toward the nursery for a quick warm-up. After a short stop we’ll retrace our tracks and cut-off onto the Santa Rosa trail that leads into Wildwood Park. This is a very fun singletrack that is moderate to fairly technical. There are some great views of the Santa Rosa Valley along the way. Once down in Wildwood we’ll head out towards Lizard Rock via the Stagecoach singletrack or the fireroad (your choice). From here we will take the Lizard Rock singletrack down to the valley floor and head on to the falls. Then there’s a fairly steep but relatively short climb up the beginning part of the Lynnmere trail. After the climb there is a lot of fun to be had on the rest of the singletrack, which leads out to Lynn Road. From here it is just a short road ride back to the cars. Meet at 9:00 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E3.5, Technical Rating = T4, 13 Miles, About 3 Hours
, Ride Leader: Jonathan

For those who are willing, we can go back into the park and return to the cars on mostly dirt with some bonus miles.

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to the Lynn Road exit in Thousand Oaks. At the end of the off-ramp proceed north. Take Lynn for several miles (it will turn into Olsen Road) until you reach Mountclef Blvd (at CLU). Or, from the 23 Freeway, exit at Avenida de los Arboles and go west. Turn right on Montclef (third stop sign), cross Olsen Rd. and park on the street.

Saturday, October 30: Ojai - Gridley to Nordhoff Peak, Modified.   This is a beautiful out and back ride on 85% singletrack that affords some spectacular views along the way. The ride begins by riding on Gridley Road and riding on the paved road which connects to the main trail. The first half of the main trail is a moderate climb and passes through several avocado groves. The second half of the main trail narrows and steepens a bit with many switchbacks. We will plan to stop at the top of the saddle and will skip the very steep fireroad that leads to the lookout tower. Since this is an out and back ride, those who tire can turn back at any time and coast back to the cars! Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E4, Technical Rating = T4.5, 13 Miles and 2800 Feet of Climbing , About 4 Hours
, Ride Leader: Charlotte

Directions:   Take the 101 Freeway to Highway 33, just a bit west of Ventura. Continue north on the 33 for approximately 13 miles until the road branches and take Highway 150 to the East. Pass through the town of Ojai and make a left (north) onto Gridley. Park at the end of the road.

Saturday, October 30: Ojai - Gridley to Nordhoff Peak.   This is a beautiful out and back ride on 85% singletrack that affords some spectacular views along the way. The ride begins with a fairly technical and difficult climb up a short connector trail. The first half of the main trail is a moderate climb and passes through several avocado groves. The second half of the main trail narrows and steepens a bit with many switchbacks. At the top of the saddle we’ll cutoff onto a fairly short but very steep fireroad that leads to an old fire lookout tower. The views from the top make the climb up worth the effort. Since this is an out and back ride, those who tire can turn back at any time and coast back to the cars. Meet at 8:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
Endurance Rating = E5, Technical Rating = T4.5, 15 Miles and 3400 Feet of Climbing , About 4 Hours

Sunday, October 31: Cheeseboro/Simi Peak/Dead Cow Rd & Lunch.   This is the only ride where we eat lunch on the ride and then try to finish after you are stuffed and tired. We start at Cheesebro, head up to Palo Comado Road and then up to China Flats. Then comes the hardest climb around. But even if you have to push every inch it is worth the climb. You can see for miles in every direction. Then we descend down and continue further down on Dead Cow Road (Don’t you just love these names?) We have lunch at El Pollo Loco and then head over to the old Jordan Ranch, climb back to the connector trail and descend back down Cheesebro. Bring money for lunch. Meet at 9:30 am and be ready to depart 15 minutes later.
