The Fine Print

By riding with the North Ranch Mountain Bikers I understand and accept the following:

I understand that mountain biking can be dangerous and accidents can result in either injury or death.

I understand there is no charge for the bike rides.

I understand that the trails the North Ranch Mountain Bikers ride may not be verified for safety or ridability.

I understand that it is my responsibility to determine if my riding skills match the difficulty of the trail we are riding on.

I understand that the ride leaders accept no responsibility for my safety on any ride and that I undertake any ride knowing that I and I alone am responsible for my safety on the ride.

News for Everybody:

April 25th:  NRMB 16th Anniversary Treasure Hunt Ride.  Can you believe it has been 16 years since the club started?  Get ready for one more NRMB Treasure Hunt Ride.  This year Joanne and Fred will be laying out the ride and making up the questions.  The ride will be at Wildwood and Joanne promises to have questions that will boggle your mind and Fred will have photos to jog your memory of the trail.

Directions:  The ride will be at Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks.  Exit Lynn Road off the 101 Freeway.  Go north for about 3 miles until you get to Avenida de los Arboles.  Turn left and head west until the road ends.  You will see a dirt parking lot on your left.  Meet there at 9:30 a.m. for a fun Treasure Hunt Ride.

May 13 – 17:  Moab!  Need I say more!!!  Join us for 3 glorious days of mountain biking at its finest.  Day 1:  Slick Rock.  Day 2:  Porcupine Rim.  Day 3:  Amassa Back.  There are even some easier rides in the area for any less aggressive riders that are interested in going, such as Gemini Bridges and Klondike Bluffs.  Please let Tamara know if you are interested in going so we can coordinate lodging and carpooling.  Also planned is a hike to Delicate Arch on Sunday afternoon and if there’s enough interest, we might even do a little river raft trip on the Colorado Saturday afternoon.

Randy's Renowned Rides:

Saturday, April 10th:  North Ranch Rim.  How about a ride that starts where this bike club started over 16 years ago.  Lets bike along the northern edge of North Ranch moving east until we get to Dead Cow Road.  Then we ride over to Palo Camado and climb up to China Flats. Down Dead Cow Road and backtrack to our cars but the final decent is a new trail at the far west end of North Ranch.  It should be worth it.  RDR = ««««½

Directions:  Exit the 101 Freeway on Westlake Blvd. going north.  Go north for about 2 miles until you get to the corner of Valley Spring Road.  On the northeast corner there is the North Ranch Community Center.  Park in this parking lot and get ready for a fun day among million dollar homes.  Meeting time is 9:30 a.m.

Sunday, April 18th:  Cheeseboro/Bell Canyon.  We will start by going up to Shepherds Flats turn right and then climb up the Edison Powerline Road.  After some wild technical single track in the backwoods, we drop down into the old Ahmenson's Ranch area and then a grueling ride back up to the Cheeseboro area.  It's all downhill back to the cars and then off for a bite to eat.

Directions:  Exit the 101 Freeway at the Chesebro off ramp in Agoura, go north for about a mile and turn to the right when you get to the park entrance.  Go up the short road to the dirt parking lot.  This is the place.  Meeting time is 9:30 a.m.    RDR = ««««½

Tamara's Titillating Treks:

Please contact Tamara if you are interested in guest leading a ride.  If you have a favorite trail that we’ve not done before and you’d like to share it with the group let me know and we’ll work out the details.

Saturday, April 3rd:  Backbone @ Encinal.  This is an out and back ride that is 99% singletrack and 200% fun.  We will begin the ride with the newer section of the trail off of Zuma Ridge Motorway.  It is approximately 10 miles along the Backbone singletrack to the parking area at the top of Coral Canyon. This trail has a lot of ups and downs and is quite technical in some sections.  We’ll stop at the parking area for a while and take in the view.  The ride back to the cars will proceed along the same trail.  This ride is approximately 20 miles round trip and should take about 4 hours to complete. Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. and ride time is 9:45 a.m.  RDR = «««««

Directions:  Take the 101 Freeway to the Kanan exit in Agoura Hills.  At the end of the off-ramp proceed south toward the ocean.  Take Kanan for several miles until you reach Mulholland Hwy.  At Mulholland make a right (west) and proceed to Encinal Canyon Road.  Stay on Encinal.  Just after you pass the water treatment plant on the left you’ll see the fireroad (also on your left) that we’ll be starting at.  Pass the fireroad and round the corner.  Park in the dirt area just off the road.

Sunday, April 4th: Cheeseboro/China Flats LoopWe will begin with an easy to moderate climb up the Sulphur Springs trail to Shepherd’s Flat.  Then we head west on the connector singletrack that leads to the Palo Camado fireroad.  We’ll continue up this rather steep fireroad for approximately a mile till we come to the top of China Flats.  The loop ride around the top of China Flats is both beautiful and easy.  Those with extra energy can ride and/or hike-a-bike up to Simi Peak.  On a clear day the view from the top is well worth the fairly short but very strenuous technical climb up to it.  We’ll then retrace our tracks and enjoy some fun downhill all the way back to the cars.  This ride is approximately 15 miles and should take about 3 hours to complete.  Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. and ride time is 9:45 a.m.    RDR = «««½

Directions:  Take the 101 Freeway to the Chesebro exit in Agoura.  Head north and make a quick right on Chesebro Road.  Follow the narrow road one-mile and turn right at the park entrance.  Continue up the paved road ¼ mile to the top parking lot.  We will assemble there.

Sunday, April 11th:  Westridge/Sullivan Canyon.  This is a loop ride that begins with a moderate to fairly difficult climb up the Caballero singletrack to dirt Mulholland.  From here it is a moderate climb on fireroad to the Nike tower.  We will then ride the Westridge singletrack all the way down to where the dirt meets the road.  Although the descent is mostly downhill, there are some rather challenging uphill sections along the way.  Should you deem any section of the singletrack too difficult, there are numerous spots where you can cut over onto the paralleling fireroad.  At the bottom we will regroup and ride a little bit of pavement over to Sullivan Canyon.  From here it’s another moderate to difficult climb back up to dirt Mulholland.  The ride ends with a fun downhill thrill on Caballero. This ride is approximately 15 miles round trip and should take about 3.5 hours to complete.  Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. and ride time is 9:45 a.m.  RDR = ««« ½  to ««««

Directions:  Take the 101 Freeway to the Reseda Blvd. exit in Tarzana.  At the end of the off-ramp proceed south (towards the ocean).  Continue up Reseda a couple of miles and park on the street at the trailhead.  If you pass the Braemar Country Club you've gone too far.

Saturday, April 24th:  Ojai – Gridley Trail to Nordhoff Peak.  This is a beautiful out and back ride on 85% singletrack that affords some spectacular views along the way.  The ride begins with a fairly technical and difficult climb up a short connector trail.  The first half of the main trail is a moderate climb and passes through several avocado groves.  The second half of the main trail narrows and steepens a bit with many switchbacks.  At the top of the saddle we’ll cutoff onto a fairly short but very steep fireroad that leads to an old lookout tower.  The views from the top make the climb up worth the effort.  Since this is an out and back ride, those who tire can turn back at any time and coast back to the cars.  This ride is approximately 15 miles round trip and should take about 4 hours to complete.  Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. and ride time is 9:45 a.m.    RDR  =  «««««

Directions:  Take the 101 Freeway to Highway 33, just a bit west of Ventura.  Continue north on the 33 for approximately 13 miles until the road branches and take Highway 150 to the East.  Pass through the town of Ojai and make a left (north) onto Gridley.  Park at the end of the road.

Ginni’s Gentle Get-Aways:

Sunday, April 18th, 9:30 am:  Sycamore Canyon from the Beach.  We’ll begin at the parking lot and ride up Big Sycamore Trail to the infamous blacktop, then backtrack to the Sin Nombre singletrack and the Two Foxes singletrack trails and then back to the main fireroad and back to the parking lot.  This ride is approximately 15 miles round trip.   Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. and ride time is 9:45 a.m.    RDR = «½

Directions:  Take PCH to Big Sycamore Canyon State Park, about 4-5 miles northwest of Kanan Road.  If you don’t want to pay the $5 fee for parking in the lot you can look for parking on PCH.  We’ll meet in front of the bathrooms, located just off of the main parking lot across PCH from the beach.

Wednesday  After Work Rides:  Wooo Hooo!!

All rides will begin at 5:45 p.m. E-mail or call to let me know that you are coming in case of any changes in the schedule.

Charlotte’s Crusades (cell: 805-890-1234):

Sunday, April 4th:  Cheeseboro.  We will begin with an easy to moderate climb up the Sulphur Springs trail to Shepherd’s Flat.  From here we’ll take the Palo Camado connector trail over to the lookout spot.  Then we’ll turn around and enjoy some fun downhill all the way back to the cars via the same route as before. This ride is approximately 12 miles and should take about 2 hours to complete.  Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. and ride time is 9:45 a.m.    RDR = ««

Saturday, April 17th:  Zuma CanyonMeet at 8:45 am at the parking lot just before the third tunnel up Kanan Road.  (Yes, the place we meet to bike as well.) We will then car shuttle to the start point of the hike, which is near the beach. The parking lot on Kanan is actually the end of the hike.    Difficulty:  Very Difficult – 4 miles of mostly bouldering with 1400 elevation gain.

Zuma Canyon is a personal favorite as it includes many, many beautiful waterfalls, and 95% of the hike is done up near or in the stream. Not only is this a very beautiful and scenic hike, it is also very difficult in that there is lots of bouldering and climbing.  It is whopping 4.1 miles with an elevation gain of 1400 feet, however it will take us 5 hours to complete (yes, less then 1 mile/hour.) It includes hiking, rock hopping, and a bunch of bouldering, and a few sections that will be some intimidating climbing. This hike/bouldering is not for the faint of heart, it requires, balance, and not being too bothered by heights. This hike is definitely not for everyone!

Plan on bringing a lunch, and long sleeves and legs to protect from poison oak, as there is generally much of it, and something to swim in, as there are many excellent swimming areas.

Below is a write up.

It still seems quite remarkable to me that, within a few miles of cosmopolitan
Los Angeles, one can hike to almost pristine wilderness where there is little likelihood of encountering another human being. Such is the case in Zuma Canyon, a deep cleft in the Santa Monica Mountains, that begins near the crest of that range and empties into the Pacific at Zuma Beach. Despite its ruggedness Zuma Canyon can be traversed without technical gear for almost its entire length. Only near the top are there several waterfalls that must be rappelled. (But we have another way to go, so we won't be rappelling.). The hike can be done in either direction, but we proceed upstream here since route finding is slightly easier in this direction. It is prettiest in the spring when the stream is running (there are a number of excellent swimming holes).

Joanna's Joyous Jaunts:

Saturday, April 17th:  Sycamore Canyon.  Join us at the south end of Wendy for one of my favorite rides. We’ll ride the Wendy Connector Trail to Big Sycamore Canyon Road and cruise on over to the Sin Nombre Singletrack.  After climbing Guadalasca we will be rewarded with the quick Backbone downhill.  From here we’ll make the climb out of the canyon and back to the cars. This ride is approximately 20 miles and should take about 3½ hours to complete.  Meeting time is 9:30 a.m. and ride time is 9:45 a.m.  Joanna's home phone: (805) 241-9772, cell: (805) 479-3087.  RDR = «««½

Directions:  Take the 101 Freeway to the Wendy exit in Newbury Park.  At the end of the off-ramp proceed south on Wendy until it dead-ends at Potrero RoadPark in the adjacent dirt parking area.
